Troubleshooting guide
Hot tub jets weak or not working
Weak or surging jets are usually a water problem, not a pump problem. Here's the order to check things, from the manufacturer troubleshooting tables.
Weak or surging jets
Hot Spring's troubleshooting table lists three causes for jets that are weak or surging, and they apply to most spas:
- Water level too low: add water until it's above the skimmer or the fill line.
- Filter or suction screens clogged: clean the filters and the suction screens.
- Jet nozzles or air valves closed: open the jets (many twist open and closed) and the air controls.
Pump hums or runs, but no water moves
Right after a refill, a pump that runs without moving water is usually air-locked (not primed). Balboa warns that a pump should not run without priming for more than 2 minutes. See airlock after a refill for the steps.
Pump shuts itself off
Hot Spring notes its jet pump has an overload cut-off that protects it from overheating, and that blocked ventilation in the equipment compartment or high summer temperatures can trip it. If the pump keeps shutting off after short use, the manual says to contact a qualified service technician.
When it's a tech job
A pump that buzzes but won't spin, leaks from the pump body, trips the GFCI, or runs on one speed only usually points to a capacitor, seal, motor or control-pack relay. Those mean opening high-voltage parts. On a video call a tech can listen to the pump, look at the pump label and tell you whether it's a part you can order or a visit.
Common questions
Why are my hot tub jets suddenly weak?
The most common causes are a low water level, a dirty filter or blocked suction screens, and jets or air controls that have been closed. Check those first; they're listed in manufacturer troubleshooting tables.
Why does my hot tub pump run but no water comes out?
If it's right after draining and refilling, the pump is probably air-locked. Turn the power off and follow your manual's priming steps. Don't let a pump run dry for more than a couple of minutes.
Can I replace a hot tub pump myself?
Pumps are wired to the control pack at high voltage. A licensed electrician or qualified spa technician should do the electrical connection, with the power off at the GFCI or breaker.
